Norah Jane Gore

Norah left home in 1905, when she was 15, to work for a family in Deal. While working for this family she went on holiday with them to Scarborough, and to Brussels, Belgium. Two years later, in 1907 she was working for a family at Coxhill House, Shepherds Well, near. Dover, as a nanny.

On 15th July 1911, at the age of 21, Norah married Ernest Thomas Friend at Lydden Parish Church. Ernest was 24 years old (b. 13.12.1886) and his occupation at the time of his marriage was a Carter. ELLEN FRIEND and Arthur WILLIAM GORE, Norah's brother, witnessed their marriage. The Friend family was a local family, some of them also lived in Lydden, and the whole family used to attend Lydden Church. It was Arthur Gore who edged Ernest Friend on to asks his sister out. They also knew Leonard Godden well, whom later married Norah's sister Evelyn. Ernest was a farm bailiff dealing with livestock. They first of all lived at Shepherdswell for a year or so. They then lived at South Barham Farm, which is just outside Barham on the Elham Road. Em used to drive a pony and trap which belonged to the Holiday Home. For a little while they then lived in the Holiday Home just up the road from Barham, before returning to live at Coxhill Farm, Shepherds Well. They stayed there for many years before moving to Chalkpit Cottages, Beakesbourne, near. Canterbury, in 1943. In 1954 they retired, and lived at 3 De Burgh Terrace and 52 Guilton Road, Guilton, Ash, near. Canterbury CT3 2HP. In 1961 the children organised a surprise party at Beakesbourne Village Hall for their Golden Wedding. Their children presented them with a television set. Ernest died on the 7th July 1964. Norah died in March 1986, aged 96 years, after spending a little time in a nursing home at Patrixbourne. They had five children

Daisy married Ernest Watson on the 16th June 1943. Her children are Jane, Michael and David. Jane DOB 3.3.1948 married John Smith on the 24th May 1969 and had three children - Mark DOB 3.4.1970, Paul DOB 6.7.1972 and Stuart DOB 13.8.1973. Michael, DOB 8.6.1944, was a Detective Sergeant in the Police and worked uncover in the Far East. He took three degrees through the Open University. David DOB 15.1.1946 married Gissela from Germany. Both Michael and David emigrated to Australia. They lived at 6 Oast Cottages, Adisham, near. Canterbury and later at 2 Worcester Lane, Beakesbourne Lane, Canterbury CT3 4AAAfter her husband died on the 29th June, 1981, Daisy moved to old people's accommodation at la Bisfrons Gardens, Patrixbourne, near. Canterbury; a converted stable block.

(2) Norman died in a motorcycle accident, aged 23 years.

(3) Olive married Tom Russell. They lived at North Bungalow, Aerodrome, Beakesbourne, near. Canterbury and later at no. 1 Hillside Cottages, Beakesbourne, near. Canterbury, CT4 5EN. Tom was Scottish and was in the Seaforth Highlanders. Olive met him while working at Dover Castle, and Tom was stationed there. Tom died about 1990 and Olive had to give up her cottage, and she moved into sheltered accommodation in Canterbury, at 18 St. Martins Hill, Canterbury. She kept herself very busy by voluntary work at the British Heart Foundation Shop for 21/2 days a week, half a day a week at a school listening to infants read, and visiting three housebound friends each month. They had five children, Norman DOB 15.9.1937, Anne DOB 31.12.1938, Pamela DOB 30.4.1940, John (Joe) DOB 18.12.1946 and Nina DOB 11.7.1951. Olive looked after her mother before she went into the Nursing Home. The three girls all married, Pamela having quite a lot of children. Joe married Susan and they live in Virginia, USA

(4) David married Doris, and lived at 19 Bisfrons Road, Patrixbourne, near Canterbury. They had two children, Brian and Joan. Joan's DOB was 2.2.1951 and she died of leukaemia on the 8th November 1975. She was married and had just had a baby.

(5) Lilly was in the WRNS. She married Tony Richardson on the 4th December 1944, at St. Peters, Beakesbourne. They lived at Valley Farm, Dalling Hoo, Woodbridge, Suffolk, and later at 38 Leopold Road, Ipswich, Suffolk 1P4 4RP. Their three sons were (1) Ronald who married Sue and children Cohn & Heather, (2) Robert who married Val and children Hannah and Olivia, and they lived at 50 Wentworth Crescent, Ash Vale, Aldershot, Hampshire, GUI? 5LF. (3) Timothy who married Joyce on the 25th June 1988.
