  Medical Notes:

Tomorrow round about lunch time, Shirley will have an operation to remove as much as possible of the intruding material (some of which will be sent for analysis to ascertain its underlying nature) without harming sound brain tissue; thereafter, radiotherapy will probably be required. Though no operation is without risk, the only alternative would be to do nothing which really is no option. One of the surgical team and I were both satisfied, despite Shirley's speech impediment, that she wishes to have the procedure and, therefore, I was happy to sign the consent paper on her behalf (when last she tried, she could not even pick up a pen, never mind manage her signature). I believe that she is in the best of hands, Kings having an excellent reputation, and am informed that the operation is of a type which is quite regularly undertaken and for which the survival rate is 95% - though the extent of any improvement in her actual symptoms cannot be forecast. Her multiple sclerosis will sadly remain and continue its course.
